Cura te ipsum – “physician heal thyself,” is the message of this interactive discussion aimed at physicians and other health care providers. It has been shown that patients are not counseled on obesity if the counselor is obese. Not only are physicians poorly informed and undereducated on healthy nutrition and lifestyle, they are reluctant to discuss such issues with their most needy, sick patients. It is easier and more profitable to prescribe medication. More physicians and health care providers need to get the message, and to “talk the talk” and “walk the walk.” What are the resources, methods, and strategies that can be used in patient care to truly change patients’ eating habits and lifestyle? Is the healer destined only to medicate, repair, patch-up and temporize the lives of the tsunami of chronically ill baby boomers overwhelming our medical system? How can we effect a cure?
